Abstract & description
[edit source]Abstract
[edit source]Under the Paris Agreement, the nations of the world have agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep global temperature rise under +1.5C degrees. But there are hundreds of thousands of states and provinces, cities, and companies that track GHG emissions separately. OpenClimate is an Open Data project to track GHG emissions, climate targets, and climate action plans of different types of climate actors so that researchers, citizens and policy makers can get a fuller view of the climate crisis.
Description
[edit source]OpenClimate is an Open Data project to track GHG emissions, climate targets, and climate action plans of different types of climate actors so that researchers and policy makers can get a fuller view of the climate crisis. Climate data is published in a wide variety of formats, from structured data to 100-page PDFs. Massive collaboration is needed to collect and collate data from disparate sources.
In this session, I will provide an overview of the goals of OpenClimate. I will describe the features as they exist, and in particular I will focus on the opportunity for mass collaboration. Finally, I will provide information on how to get involved in this process.
Further details
[edit source]Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
The climate emergency is one of the most important problems facing humanity today. But the consequences of failure are unevenly spread, with people of the global south likely to suffer the most damage. Even in more industrialised nations, climate justice will be an important issue. Knowing who is emitting and what their plans are for reducing emissions is the first step to moving climate justice forward.
