Abstract[edit source]

Poster Category: Open Data Session Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Singapore

Libraries and Wikimedia embraces the open ecosystem to diversify and actualize the UN 2030 SDGs goals of free information for all. The collaboration of these two power houses of free knowledge promises an innovative future learning in Africa, visibility to local contents, improved usability and contributions from well meaning editors. With the linkages of free and relevant institutional repository resources, which has been carefully evaluated and acquired for users consumption to Wikimidia spaces, there’s hope for a reputable data space.

Description[edit source]

The 21st century library system leverages open ecosystem to diversify in their routine, shared services and innovative techniques for service delivery and support to learning. Open ecosystem equals no ownership, a system where everyone is free to diversify, share data and operate. It is a system where flexible and innovative ideas are breed without discrimination. Libraries and Wikimedia embraces such a system which is open to everyone’s exploration in their support for open data and access. Open access enables dissemination of research outputs and free access to same without charges or restrictions. In Wikimedia spaces, knowledge is contributed for free access and resources referenced for improved visibility. This poster tries to illustrate the relevance of Wikimedia to library and how most Wikimedia projects can serve as prodigy to creating high visibility and accessibility to library resources. Wikimedia sister projects such as Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikicommons among others were highlighted on their relevance to the prodigy movement. The poster discussed few projects already carried out to achieve some of these goals and suggests ways to seamlessly leverage the open ecosystem and encourage the powerful intersection of the two information oriented spaces (Wikipedia + Libraries). The poster is aimed at exploring pathways to leverage the relevance of Wikimedia projects to library resources visibility and accessibility, understand how some Wikimedia projects intersects with the library and the programmes to implement, learning how different Wikimedia projects works. The outcome will be beneficial to Librarians, Wikimedia editors, educators, and professionals from other fields of study.
