Putting people on their bikes and sending them away to illustrate Commons

During Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Moldova, a novel idea came about: “What if we send people on their bicycles to discover and take photos of cultural heritage sites by themselves?”. The gamified activity provides flexibility to participants – they can choose their own time and route. But most importantly it provides Commons illustrations of landmarks outside the usual touristic routes.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Almost all societies, regardless of their size or socioeconomic circumstances, include some kind of community based around bicycles or similar alternative transportation. Wikimedia communities may leverage the choice of leisure time of those circles, by motivating them to contribute to Wikimedia as they travel. In some places of the world, like Moldova, bicycle and alternative transportation users don’t really have any connection to Wikimedia, and by reaching out to them with gamified projects like the bike quest we can bring diversity and open new fronts of collaboration.
