Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Poster Category: Technology Session Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Singapore

This presentation and discussion sessions looks into how Wikipedia could be improved by featuring 3D renderings to help illustrate articles and looks at examples of notable 3D renderings currently being done on other sites. We will end with a discussion how to better support the development of interactive 3D renderings on the Wikis.

Description[edit source]

Featuring 3D renderings of notable objects and places offers great opportunities for improving Wikipedia articles by making them both more engaging for readers whilst also helping them better comprehend the subject. Support for featuring 3D renderings of objects has become increasingly common and better supported on the internet generally; however this support is not currently matched on Wikimedia Commons thereby limiting Wikipedia’s ability to feature 3D objects. This presentation and discussion will start with a brief introduction into how 3D objects are supported on other websites, give examples of what sort of 3D objects could be featured on Wikipedia to improve articles, and end with a discussion on how greater support could be given to developers to create the tools needed to feature 3D objects on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Featuring 3D objects to help illustrate Wikipedia will make both Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons more engaging for readers as well as more inclusive of people who are not inclined to learn best though the written word (such as dyslexics). Thereby helping make Wikipedia a more neurodiverse place whilst also improving and updating it. Key to this is community and developer collaboration with the Foundation to develop the tools to make this happen.
