In 2022, the Wiki Loves Women team launched a podcast series featuring 16 inspiring women from Africa who lead their professions and build future communities with an open mindset. This poster extracts the many inspiring quotations from the podcast conversations - accompanied by the portraits of each guest. The series has given these women a platform to tell their stories with their voice, and provided reference material for future articles.
Description
[edit source]Wiki Loves Women (a project of Wiki in Africa) is a champion of women’s stories. They have accumulated a vault of interesting tales from dynamic women who push the boundaries of what it means to build community and succeed as a collective. These are the stories and ideas behind successful African women shared in the Inspiring Open podcast. From tech gurus to authors, educators to activists, the Inspiring Open podcast draws wisdom and insights from women who intersect the ‘open movement’ and inspire with their thoughts and actions.
Globally the voices of women remain underrepresented. The 6th Global Media Monitoring Project (2020) revealed that between 2015 and 2020, the proportion of female subjects and sources featured by the media increased from 24% to 25% . This 1% improvement is the first since 2010 and is most visible in broadcast news media.
covering such diverse sectors - from libraries to employment, tech to music, writing to education, and so much more, - Inspiring Open provided an unusual way for Wikipedians to close the visibility gap and sources gap about successful women from Africa. It also showcased women within and on the fringes of the Open movement.
The poster will be a mixture of inspiring quotations, illustrations and introductions to the rarely seen women leaders.
