Abstract & description
[edit source]Abstract
[edit source]Poster Category: Equity and Community Health Session Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Singapore
Wiki Loves Women focuses on bridging two significant gaps on Wikimedia projects – women and Africa – both in terms of content about these subjects and in terms of participation by people from these groups. The project is designed to leverage Wikipedia’s role as a global repository for the dissemination of information to achieve accessible and fair online representation of notable women in countries in Africa. It encourages the contribution of existing researched and verified information by civil society organisations to Wikipedia with the intent of redressing the systemic bias online about women.

Further details
[edit source]Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
Wiki Loves Women is closely related to the ideas of diversity, collaboration, and the future. Here’s how:
One of the main goals of Wiki Loves Women is to increase the diversity of Wikipedia content by closing the gender gap. By creating and improving articles about women and their work, the initiative is working towards a more diverse representation of knowledge on Wikipedia. This aligns with the broader idea of diversity, which emphasizes the importance of including diverse perspectives, experiences, and identities in all aspects of society, including knowledge sharing.
Wiki Loves Women is a collaborative initiative that involves partnerships with various organizations, including cultural institutions, universities, and community groups. By working together, these organizations can share resources, expertise, and networks to achieve a common goal: increasing the representation of women on the Wikimedia projects. Collaboration is an essential aspect of the initiative’s success, and it demonstrates the power of working together towards a shared vision. And the best example to give here, is the WLW Focus group, that is composed by 19 members from 9 different countries and 9 different cultures who are collaborating together. Finally, Wiki Loves Women is focused on the future of knowledge sharing. By closing the gender gap on Wikipedia, the initiative is helping to create a more inclusive and diverse platform for knowledge sharing. This will have a significant impact on future generations who will have access to a wider range of perspectives and experiences. By investing in diversity and collaboration today, Wiki Loves Women is creating a better future for all of us.
