Description[edit source]

Have you ever tried to reuse a reference within the same article? Maybe even with a different page number? It’s surprisingly hard.

In 2022, the German wiki communities voted for “make reusing references easier”[2] as their top priority in Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes survey. There are lots of different problems inside this area, and some requests for improvement have been unfulfilled for many years. Although this topic was selected by the German wiki communities, it will affect everyone who works with references, as the improvements made will be implemented on all wikis. That’s why, in this session, we will share our plans for improving the reuse of references within an article. And we want to hear your thoughts on them!

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Diversity: The Technical Wishes project is committed to integrating diverse voices into the software development process.[1] At Wikimania, we want to present our plans for changes to a core part of the editing experience to get feedback from a diverse crowd of participants.

Collaboration: The motto of the Technical Wishes project is “Improving MediaWiki together”: communities determine the focus of our work, and their feedback is heard throughout the development process. Sharing our plans here will allow us to get feedback on the proposed changes.

Future: We plan to improve how references are used. This will change the editing experience of many contributors, and we want to ensure that it does this in the best possible way.
