Alegre (user:Buszmail) belongs to Wikipedia’s esteemed Fifteen Year Society, an informal grouping of editors who have been contributing to the Wikipedia project for fifteen years or more. He served as an officer (President, 2014-2015) (Vice-Chairman, 2015-2016) and trustee of the former Wikimedia Philippines (that became the Wiki Society of the Philippines). In transition, he was extended a brief honorary membership in the Bikol Community by what later became Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group. In 2020, he was engaged in meetings towards clarifying effective Philippine regulations and legislation on the country's Freedom Of Panorama (FOP); which initiated his involvement with the ESEAP regional hub. In the 2022 virtual Annual General Meeting of the Philippine Wikimedia Community UG based in Naga City, Johnny Alegre was voted as president of the User Group; his tenure concluding at year-end, in favor of co-founding and heading the Pilipinas Panorama Community on December 2, 2022, and engagement in the Movement Charter Ambassador Program. Alegre headquarters his activities in the Philippines' National Capital Region metropolis where he resides. He also serves as administrator of the Facebook discussion group, Philippine Wikimedia Kapihan Network.

Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

The startup Wikimedia group which I head and co-founded, Pilipinas Panorama Community (PPC), is a thematic community based in Metro Manila, Philippines. It was organized in late 2022 by Manila-based Wikimedians advocating cultural heritage, history, language & ethnicity, art, freedom of panorama, and Wikimedia's Movement Strategy, contributing to expand the global availability of free knowledge.

I wish to present a capsule overview of PPC's flagship advocacy, Freedom of Panorama, before the diverse audience attending Wikimania 2023 in Singapore.

Description[edit source]

Freedom of Panorama is a little-known yet important legal right; for photographers, netizens, and content creators to freely capture and share public works of art and architecture found in or seen from public spaces, usually installed on a permanent basis. FoP serces to benefit Wikimedia's readership by acting as a freely accessible adjunct to information on all branches of knowledge. In the context of FoP in the Philippines, we are amidst a legislative work in progress. My reportorial on the subject will be of interest to Wikimedians in ESEAP, and perhaps the global audience.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Freedom of Panorama is generally cast as an "exception" under Copyright. However, the extent of FoP is subject to the ramifications set in different countries. That this freedom aims to provide users the legal right to publish pictures in the public space, very scant literature exists on the topic. Henceforth, I venture a need to "harmonize" our collective perspectives as Wikimedians on this matter, of what visual content we can offer in our Wikipedias of many languages.
