Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

To enhance awareness and readership among future audiences, we developed a new forms of content contribution and knowledge consumption for attendees to try: [Wikistories for Wikipedia](https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikistories_for_Wikipedia).

Description[edit source]

Wikimedia projects are essential in the infrastructure of knowledge sharing on the internet. However, our share of media interaction and consumption is shrinking as more people come online. Newer platforms are growing exponentially, also the internet is becoming more multi-modal, interactive, and social. These changes challenge both our contribution and consumption models.

The need to adapt to these opportunities has risen due to the changing expectations of our users about digital products. To match these expectations, we have to match/exceed the quality of other experiences that users are exposed to. The simplest way to do that is to re-use and refine popular platforms patterns, methods and mental models.

Most users coming into Wikipedia fail to move beyond their first edits due to a number of factors including;

  • Lack of education or support (not knowing how to do things),
  • Lack of identity (not fitting in as a model “Wikipedian”),
  • Lack of community (feeling unwelcome, or else being unaware of a community, etc.)

This interactive session will engage and collaborate with attendees on ways to enhance readership and awareness among future audiences. The session will also include an interactive opportunity through a workshop for attendees to engage with new forms of content contribution and knowledge consumption through our recently developed story creation tool: [Wikistories for Wikipedia](https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikistories_for_Wikipedia).

Wikistories consider the constraints editors in emerging digital communities face when contributing content, and make it easier/more welcoming to contribute to knowledge successfully through mobile phones. Wikistories would be a gateway to attracting new contributors into the [Movement](https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Strategy) by lowering the barrier/learning curve. Creating a Wikistories is designed to be intuitive and envisioned as a learning ground for newcomers who want to edit articles in the future. Using short text and images would attract traffic/new readers to our projects through easy sharing of content and general brand awareness.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

We believe with this new tool (Wikistories for Wikipedia), everyone can share their knowledge as easily as possible and visually appealing. Most of internet users nowadays consume content in short and/or visual format, because around 91% of the population choosing visual and interactive content to a traditional text-based format (https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2018/04/02/visual-content-the-future-of-storytelling/?sh=5992ce73a465) which has caused approximately 65% of people, both young and old, to identify as visual learners.

Furthermore, with this tool everyone can collaborate to explore all of topics and share their knowledge to diversify the content on Wikimedia projects. We hope this tool can be a great start for newcomers to try and grow active contributing to the Wikimedia projects.
