Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

As we are commencing towards the new era of the internet which is web3.0; it is the need of the hour to be equipped with technologies such as Virtual reality and Metaverse which can revolutionise the ways we communicate. Rather delivering content verbally, letting users enter an immersive environment where they can explore and get knowledge in a more interactive manner in virtual reality is the next big thing !

We are delighted to propose an innovative and smarter XR solution “Wikiverse” which can be implemented in the workshops. Allowing users to transform themselves into a new world of engaging and interactive virtual environment, where they can get hands on experiences .

"Representing Wikimedia campaigns through virtual reality would be a stepping stone towards the future"

Description[edit source]

The virtual reality experiences will be given in person and the people at the conference would be requested to wear the virtual reality headset. The theme of this idea will be focused on the Wikimedia campaigns and future aspects of Wikimedia, which can be shown virtually in an immersive way.

Synopsis

Creating a virtual reality application for Wiki Loves Folklore VR art gallery, experience, or exhibition
The idea is to create an immersive environment consisting of an art gallery that would display all the winning images from the 2019–2022 Wiki Loves Folklore photography contest.

  • The virtual reality art gallery would showcase the diverse art, cultures, and lifestyles of many areas to give visitors the impression that they are actually there and experiencing things firsthand
  • The images on Interaction will display detailed information such as description, photographer, date, and significance
  • Users will be able to interact with their hand gestures in the virtual world.Users will be able to explore the art gallery completely , where they would be educated with the significance of this campaign
  • Also, a virtual guide will be shown, which will guide the user on how to participate in the competition
  • User can freely explore the gallery by translating movement using controllers

Translating from a website page (web2.0) to a fully immersive 3D virtual environment (web3.0) significantly elevates the user experience and can prove the basis for the future. There will be some fun activities in the VR art exhibition through which, along with information, the user can get some entertainment.

Note: The speaker will bring one VR apparatus for a one-on-one experience with the audience. In case more than one person needs to watch the VR exhibition, we will need support from the Wikimania organisers with the name of your device and the model.

Objectives

  1. Educating people about Wiki Loves Folklore
  2. What the future holds for Wikipedia (the limitless possibilities)
  3. Fun and entertainment for people in the conference (something unique experience through web3.0 technologies and interaction)
  4. Collect Feedback of users in interactive manner

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

The virtual reality experience can prove to be unique and entertaining for the user. The main motive behind it is to create a proof of concept of Virtual reality event for Wikipedia which can be extended and have limitless possibilities in future.

It will be the first time for Wikipedia to equip VR technology on their conference and would prove to receive love and interest from the audience along with PR. Virtual reality is a new technology that could change how people live and work in the future. It can be applied to entertainment, education, and more. Global collaborations in VR environments, immersive training programmes, and virtual conferences are just a few examples of the new opportunities for collaboration and diversity that may arise as technology advances and is more widely used.

VR Wiki conferences can lay the foundation for future Wikimania meetings that can be held in the metaverse, where each individual can have their own avatar and socially interact with each other virtually in person.
