Abstract

[edit source]

Biaro is a small island which is about 100km away from the coastal of Sulawesi. It's an island of 6km wide and 8k population. This presentation is related to practical examples of interdiciplinary approach to the people in the island and assessment.

I made a transcript hoping that people would like to learn more about this island and in comparison to their own knowledge and maritime expertise on some other islands such as Tuvalu or Vanuatu in the Pacific.

Description

[edit source]

Biaro is a remote island in Indonesia, a pretty remote island that can be appreciated for its pristine condition. It’s part of the Sitaro group of islands. It has limited electricity from 6pm to 2am in the morning, with no bank, no hotel and no police precinct. I made several way of assessment incorporating my knowledge which is related to economic rights i.e. food security, health issues, education, social life, energy conservation and how to sustain living in this remote island.  I hope my transcript might attract people who have concern of how a remote island is behaving, how the people are doing, and how the people can survive from the resources they have.

I wish to engage with the audience interested in promoting green environment. And also if there is a chance in Capacity Building for any island they might have in mind. I wish to get some response of what we can learn from this particular island. To have more information on what we can do more with the resources they may already have. Comparison with other regions how they could process better. What methods are available to use the resources effectively without or with minimum outside help and how to sustain living in the island like how to produce more from coconut trees, how to cultivate cloves and nutmegs etc.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

I wish to get some continual support of what we can learn from this particular island. To collaborate more on what we can do more with the resources they might already have. This Wikimania event, after the pandemic, I believe will give chances to pose questions directly to the people who share the same interests where I can get direct answers for things that I always wanted to ask about. I wish to explore more on what are the issues of Social Entrepreneurship elsewhere, in Indonesia and Asia Pacific? And what are or what could be the economic and social rights for the people during the course of social entrepreneurship that can be implemented within a small/remote islands? I want to hear more about Climate Change, Environmental issues and Energy Conservation.
