Abstract

[edit source]

Open access platforms such as Wikimedia Commons can play a key role in the diversification of visual digital content as they give people and communities the possibility to create, protect and disseminate their own local images as carriers of their knowledge and historical memories. Using these projects, such as Wikimedia Commons, people can diffuse their own reality and context’s perception creating a more representative Internet. This panel seeks to highlight some efforts made by volunteers, communities, allies, and chapters from the Wikimedia movement, to use and promote Wikimedia Commons to create a more representative and diverse Internet through the power of open-access images.

Description

[edit source]

In the digital era images circulate increasingly numerous and fast through different Internet platforms, as powerful vehicles of information and representation; yet, as knowledge, images are not neutral and they have the potential to change people’s perception of things or to prolong mainstream narratives or points of view depending on who and where they are held. Open access platforms such as Wikimedia Commons can play a key role in the diversification of visual digital content as they give people and communities the possibility to create, protect and disseminate their own local images as carriers of their knowledge and historical memories. Using these projects, people can diffuse their own reality and context’s perception creating a more representative Internet. This panel seeks to highlight some efforts made by volunteers, communities, allies, and chapters from the Wikimedia movement, to use and promote Wikimedia Commons to create a more representative and diverse Internet through the power of open-access images. We would like participants can learn why wikimedians have chosen WikiCommons to promote new visions of the world, how they have done it, and which kind of impact these initiatives have had in the engagement process of new wikimedians.
