Abstract

Wiktionary translations are a very good resource that some users find it hard to use. Kamus is a user-friendly approach to make Wiktionary translations easier to use, which might help improving Wiktionary itself. I'll explain how it's done and future plans. Kamus is free software.

Description

Last year I implemented Kamus (https://kamus.pina.cat/) which I use as a multilingual dictionary. In this session I would like to:

- Explain why Kamus was created: how it started, why, how it can be used - Explain how it's implemented using Python/Django and where the data is fetched from, how it is processed and which problems were found - Present future ideas: adding new languages, using different libraries and an API for console usage. - Discuss privacy improvements both for the user and for the server - Get feedback (after the session)

Hopefully someone will find Kamus a good tool and start using it / contributing to it. This is a way to increase the use of Wiktionary translations which might lead to improvement of Wiktionary.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

For the "Collaboration Future": I will explain some problems that I have/had in Kamus because of different formats of Wiktionary. Using Kamus might also reveal some problems in the translations in Wiktionary that might relate to future collaborations of Wiktionary editors.

Diversity: I think that one of the multiple aspects of diversity are different languages. Kamus and Wiktionary translations are right there. Wiktionary has translations for some languages with hardly any dictionaries, so using and improving these translations potentially might help some languages.
