Abstract & description
[edit source]Abstract
[edit source]This session will provide a walkthrough of a new tool developed by Wiki Education to identify equity content gaps on Wikidata queries. This tool was inspired by the Women in Red WikiProject and its intention is to encourage the creation of articles about individuals from underrepresented communities and populations.
Description
[edit source]This video overview will walk viewers through a new equity tool developed by Wiki Education. Based on Women in Red's approach to identifying Wikipedia articles about women-identifying individuals from other language Wikipedias, this tool focuses on ethnicity, country of citizenship, sexual orientation, and other demographic variables to discover and address content gaps on Wikipedia. We hope this tool will encourage the community to edit more articles in this area, improve existing sourcing, and continue to meet the strict sourcing requirements around this sensitive set of data.
Further details
[edit source]Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
This tool exists to promote diversity on Wikipedia. Using Wikidata queries to show content gaps in English (or other language versions of) Wikipedia, we hope this tool will make creating and improving articles of underrepresented individuals easier on Wikipedia. By integrating it into the Dashboard, we hope future instructors will be able to more easily promote and engage with this kind of work.
