I am Dr. Ngozi Eunice Osadebe, a Deputy University Librarian at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). I am a certified member of the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN). I am married with children. I won the Prof. M.I Ajibero Award for the best Ph.D. thesis from Nigerian Library Schools in 2016 and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka excellent performance award in 2017. I am the South East Geopolitical zone representative of the AuthorAid National Research Hub, Nigeria, and a fellow of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Martha Farrell Foundation. I believe in the capability of libraries to transform communities. Based on this belief, I organize library programs that can empower individuals with the skill to end poverty, fight hunger, deepen knowledge, attain good health, reduce inequalities, and mitigate climate change. I am a volunteer and secretary, at the Children’s Centre Library, UNN, from 2002 -2016, and the Chairman from 2017-2022. I have published 4 book chapters and 52 journal articles. I am a founding member and Coordinator of Surplus People in the Universities Research Group (SPURG), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the Director of Literacy for Sustainable Living Nigeria, (an NGO whose aim is to equip individuals with the skill to make informed decisions). I organize the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, UNN, and Surplus People in the Universities Research Group (SPURG), Art and Feminism English Wikipedia edit-a-thon. I joined the Wikimedia movement in 2017 and have been organizing Wikimedia events since then. I have participated in the Wikimania conference twice. Some new participants in the Wikimedia movement from my group were awarded Wikimania 2022 grants to attend the conference online. It is my dream to see a world in which librarians are active, transforming societies through information provision.

Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Many newbies to Wikimedia received Wikimania 2023 grant to participate in the conference. Among our group, 36 newbies received the grant. It is necessary to identify the experiences of the newbies at the conference that can serve as a tool in maintaining the newbies’ loyalty to Wikimedia.

Description[edit source]

The theme of the Wikimania 2022 conference was “the festival edition”. It was the celebration of the journey of the Wikimedia project so far. Grants were extended to many people especially newcomers (newbies) to the Wikimedia movement to join the celebration. About 36 new participants among the different groups in the Nigerian Wikimedia User group indicated on their WhatsApp platforms that they received the grant. This study aims to examine the experiences of these newbies at the conference to find out if these experiences can be built upon to retain the newbies as active participants in the Wikimedia movement. The study is a descriptive study. 36 newbies that received the grant will serve as the population of the study. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) will be used for data gathering. The FGD will be guided by an FGD guide prepared by the researcher. The finding of the study will be presented in the narrative.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

This topic is related to the theme of the conferences because it aimed to study the experiences of different groups of Wikimedia newbies from Nigeria at the Wikimania 2023 conference. By extending the grant to people from different countries to participate in the conference, the WMF is indirectly diversifying participants of the Wikimedia movement. Diversified participants invariably will lead to diversified content in Wikimedia projects and readership. If the WMF can retain at least half of the participants of the Wikimedia 2022 to the Wikimedia movement, the aim of the WMF of making Wikimedia the sum of all knowledge will be achieved.
