Title: IIAB helping hardware add on

Speakers:

Suyash Dwivedi

I am an electronics engineer from India. I mostly edit on my home Wiki Hindi Wikipedia, Commons (Contributions), and Wikidata. I am Vice-Chair and Treasurer of the Affiliations Committee, Vice-Chair Commons Photographers User Group founder member of the Hindi Wikimedians User Group, and Ex-EC member of the Wikimedia India chapter. Developing new electronic gadgets, photography, interacting with people, learning new things, listening to Indian classical music, and watching plays are my hobbies. My work I am contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects for more than 9 years. After attending WikiConference India 2016, and TTT2017, I felt there is a lot of work to do in the field of awareness of Wikipedia among societies and outreach activities so, so other than online editing I am more involved in organizing conferences, meetups, GLAM, online photography competitions like Wiki Love Monuments, Wikipedia Asian Month, etc.

Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB) is an effort to provide Wikipedia and other content via physical media. It is primarily for distribution in places where access to the Internet is limited or controlled. The device includes software that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot that offers closed platform access. In practice, this means that up to 32 users who are within a couple of hundred meters of the hotspot can connect to the device and access or download the content that exists on the device: Wikipedia slices, medical knowledge, videos, and books. IIAB is not intended to further connect users to the Internet or to content, beyond what is presented in the Box itself.

My talk will focus on its detailed introduction field of application and on practical challenges in using it in public places and its solutions.

Description[edit source]
