Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Quechua communities around the world gather millions of people. Unfortunately, there are only a few resources available in Quechua language, and they are mainly stored in unstructured format. In this lecture, the Quechua base is envisioned and generated as an effort to get Quechua closer to the Quechua communities, researchers, and technology developers through Wiki projects.

Description[edit source]

The availability of interoperable linguistics resources is nowadays more urgent in order to save and help under-resourced languages, and their communities. Despite the efforts, not all languages are represented, nor made accessible in a structured format. Furthermore, well-spread languages, like English or Spanish, took up an overwhelming majority on the Web, while indigenous communities and their resources received less attention.

In order to overcome these limitations, we propose a series of workshops, tutorials, methods, and tools, for saving and helping under-resourced languages, and their communities. For instance: - Keep linguistic diversity of orality with Lingualibre, which allows recording voice messages for words, phrases, and so on. - Document current events via Wikimedia Commons, which allows users to contribute with media resources, such as images and so on. - Decentralize demographic contributions with Wikibase, which allows communities to design, create, curate and deploy a mature decentralized knowledge base. - Get educators, students, researchers, and developers to work together for more inclusive education for all through Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

- Diversity. We will ensure that not only one single point of view is shown, it gives to minority and under-represented communities the opportunity to present their progress, learn from each other, and most important work together in future projects.

- Collaboration. We develop several methods, tools, teacher guides, and learning plans that can be reused across Quechua communities, and adapted to any community.

- Future. We aim that minority communities from South America can work closely together in order to leverage and improve the development of common approaches to save knowledge and bring inclusiveness, diversity to our communities.
