Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

The Middle East is a source of different cultures and a source of heritage, despite this, the intellectual property laws in the Middle East are somewhat strict and outdated, and this creates a knowledge gap. Through this session, I will work on identifying and solving problems in a rights context and exchanging ideas for potential solutions.

Description[edit source]

The Middle East region is one of the regions that contains an important history, archaeological sites and important historical works. Through this session, we plan to solve existing problems in the context of intellectual property rights in the Middle East region, reach out to other target communities that have the same or similar difficulties, and exchange ideas with them for possible answers. Some of the laws in the countries of the Middle East are old and sometimes strict, and countries may work to give intellectual property rights powers to some government agencies and some public institutions. We will discuss some reports on the possibility of establishing knowledge partnerships with public institutions, private collectors, and intellectual property rights organizations and negotiating knowledge partnerships with them. We will also explain the important role of universities and educational institutions in creating repositories of open educational resources and open data policy in the Middle East for the public to better understand the context of barriers to intellectual property. Through a study conducted by Osama Eid (Osps7) on some individuals and public institutions in the Middle East, it was found that some of them lack an understanding of openness and the legal and illegal aspects of intellectual property, and this hinders the full potential of opportunities available to the contributors of Wikimedia projects. This lecture aims to break down real or perceived barriers to intellectual property.
