Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

National lobbying efforts have the potential to affect not just national legislation but to inspire other countries in their work. By coordinating and working together we can create the change needed and protect what is important for our work with free knowledge. During the presentation suggestions on what to focus on and strategies to use are provided.

Description[edit source]

The Wikimedia movement is in many ways a unique player when it comes to lobbying efforts. As a key stakeholder for such a highly used and well known platform as Wikipedia we can gain access and position our arguments like few others in the free knowledge movement can. We can, and should, highlight real problems for our volunteer community and users for our elected officials and representatives.

Many Wikimedia organizations and volunteers are already actively working with lobbying within their national or local context and a few are also involved internationally. The more countries we effectively can cover is however beneficial for all of us as the legislators are looking at each other to find inspiration and ideas. But how do we provide information and support throughout the legislative process? How do we form the networks needed to gain traction? How do we shape our arguments and ideas and adjust them for different audiences? How do we shape the public narrative? What are the most common pitfalls that we can help each other overcome? In this presentation we will outline different strategies and cover some of the pressing political issues currently facing our platforms and the Movement.

By collaborating with each other we can share lessons learned, help to inspire our legislative officials and representatives and affect real change.

There are multiple political issues looming at the horizon and we need to think hard on how to tackle them in the future and prepare ourselves with data, arguments, strong communication skills and public support.
