Abstract

[edit source]

A number of Wikimedians have been pioneering doing livestreams while editing the Wikimedia projects. What has been learned and what different kinds of experiences have they had? And what lies ahead for the future?

In this panel we will explore different perspectives, motivations and what benefits we have seen.

While the panel have a some prepared points to discuss, we highly encourage the audience to ask questions and we are all used to interacting with the community through the chat.

Description

[edit source]

The panel features four experienced Wikimedia editors who will discuss the pros and cons of live-streaming when editing Wikipedia. The panelists have a wealth of experience and knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of live-streaming and will provide valuable insights for the attendees.

While live-streaming coding or game-play, broadcasting Wikipedia editing is a relatively new phenomenon with few editors doing it. It enables editors to understand other editors workflows and how they use tools by watching editing in real-time on an article with the possibility to ask questions. Compared to a tutorial video, the interactivity is key. It can also be a significant advantage when it comes to understaning how to edit controversial or sensitive content as it could involve a lot of nuance that is hard to capture in written form. The panelists will discuss the benefits of live-streaming, including the possibility of outreach, and getting feedback on edits in real-time.

Despite the advantages, live-streaming also presents some potential drawbacks. The panelists will discuss these concerns and highlight how to mitigate these risks. Attendees of the panel session will have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of the panelists and gain insight into the pros and cons of live-streaming when editing Wikipedia.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

This session mostly relates to collaboration, as editing live is a way to edit together as one usually interacts with the chat and possibly also other people in the stream.

It slightly relates to future as this is still a vastly unexplored opportunity to reach new audiences and engage with editors who might not prefer to learn or be inspired by a text based medium. In fact, it is not yet possible to stream using only Wikimedia platforms, but perhaps that will be possible in the future.

Qn. What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session

Qn. What is the most appropriate format for this session?

  • Empty Onsite in Singapore
  • Tick Remote online participation, livestreamed
  • Empty Remote from a satellite event
  • Empty Hybrid with some participants in Singapore and others dialing in remotely
  • Empty Pre-recorded and available on demand
