In this workshop, we will present the latest updates on the knowledge gap index [0], a dataset and tool to explore quantifiable evidence about the state of knowledge gaps in Wikimedia projects. We will discuss the research behind the index, and showcase and explore the data with the audience. We seek input on the direction of the project, and to brainstorm ideas on new and existing ways in which Wikimedians can make use of this data.

Since 2019 WMF has been investing in developing the Knowledge Gap Index [0]. We identified more than 30 gaps of knowledge in Wikipedia and we have been methodically building metrics to measure each of these gaps [1]. Since March 2023 the first batch of public data is available to our communities to start interacting with. We will use the opportunity of being in one place with the Wikimedia communities to celebrate this milestone through an interactive workshop where the attendees will learn how to use the data in their work. Here is how we currently envision to run this session (subject to change in the coming days):
- A short presentation: We will present the taxonomy of knowledge gaps [2] and briefly share the community-centered methodology we followed to develop metrics for measuring the gaps identified in the taxonomy. We will look at 1 gap in more details as an example.
- We will dedicate the bulk of the session time for the attendees to start using the data that is now public. For an example refer to the list of content metrics [3]. We will walk the audience through the steps to get to the data, download the data, and we will receive sample questions from the audience (or per-populate them ourselves) and together we will use the data to answer those questions. (Note: we expect to have some visual interface over the data by Wikimania, for example, sample jupyter notebooks to allow the less tech-savvy audience to interact with the data.)
- We will gather feedback from the audience about the usefulness of the data for their decision making, and any other feedback that can help us make the data more easily usable by those interested. We also will share future plans for the Knowledge Gap Index including the timeline of implementation for the remaining measurements.

The data in the knowledge gap index can help uncover inequalities and disparities in the Wikimedia projects, by showing, for example, the distribution of Wikipedia articles across different geographies and genders. The aim of the index is to help affiliates, user groups and Wikimedia volunteers to make data-driven decisions about how to bridge knowledge gaps in Wikimedia projects, thus fostering collaborative work that improve the diversity of content and participation in the projects.
