Description
[edit source]This session aims to describe the process of mapping knowledge gaps in terms of content related to a particular subject area on Wikipedia. The speakers will first briefly introduce the knowledge gaps taxonomy framework. Then, we will talk about the tools and techniques that can be used for mapping the existing knowledge on a Wikimedia project, such as category trees, navboxes and API searches. Following this, we will discuss the strategies and tools for finding the knowledge gaps, touching upon the Listeria and OpenRefine tools. Some techniques for finding credible knowledge sources in the literature will also be discussed, with examples taken from the 'Knowledge gaps in women’s health' project. The various community initiatives for bridging the knowledge gaps, such as edit-a-thons, writing contests, writing challenges, cite-a-thons will also be discussed briefly. We will also elucidate on the challenges of locating and filling the content gap in the knowledge pertaining to under-represented populations, using the content on English Wikipedia about the Gond adivasi (indigenous people) of India as an example.
