I usually work as a project manager and an organizer in the Wikimedia Movement locally and globally. I'm very much interested in the outreach activities and working with the newbies in the movement. I'm also interested in creating leadership and skilled volunteers in the communities. I'm the founder of NDEC Wikipedia Editorial and Research Team. Besides I'm a certified Media & Information Literacy trainer of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program.

Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

NDEC WERT is an extra curricular Wikimedia team of Notre Dame English Club at Notre Dame College, Dhaka. Through this team, we are exploring the possibility of running Wikimedia activities in the form of ECA where including Wikimedia in the main curriculum isn't possible.

Description[edit source]

Wikipedia and Education is mostly concentrated in the global south, specially in the US and Canada. Spreading it all over the world is a big challenge, and unawareness, lack of awareness, resources, and support are some of the big issues in that regard.

I did some experiments in my own high schools and formed a specialized wikimedia team under another established movement oriented extra curricular organization. Our recent projects have also been successful in creating an awareness among the teachers and the stakeholders of the institution of what wikimedia does and can do. So, I got the established organizational structure, resources, support and everything from the mother organization without worrying that much, and the system is sustaining itself depending on the mutual benefit of the organization and the movement. We can learn from and replicate this model where we don't have direct access to the curriculum, specially in the underrepresented countries.

Since the mother organization has its own customs and philosophies, which are aligned with the movement, but not the exact same; we can't bind the entity within the strict legal structure of the affiliates, even though their functions are almost identical. This initiative is also working as an experiment on the effectivity of "non affiliate organized groups" which can play an important role in decentralizing the governance structure of the movement.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

NDEC WERT is an initiative to sustain the future of the movement by including diversity in the governance structure of the movement and shifting the focus away from recognized affiliates. At the same time, the model works as a powerhouse for including new young minds in the local movement who have the skillset to bring new perspectives to the table. This innovative approach in wikimedia education will also give us access to more educational institutions while increasing the movement's allies and creating new collaboration opportunities.
