En Merker I have been a Wikipedia user since 2019. During this time, I have more than 45,000 edits on Wikipedia. I am mainly active in the Azerbaijani segment of Wikipedia and Wikidata. Among the Wikipedia conferences, I participated in the Wikidata conference of Turkic-speaking countries in Istanbul in 2022. This conference opened new opportunities for me to work at Wikidata. I live in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. I am a university teacher and I have a RHD scientific degree. I am the leader and active participant of the Wikiclub at the Central Scientific Library in Baku.

Abstract

The project presented to the Wikimania conference is dedicated to the work that can be done in the direction of creating Wikiclubs in universities and libraries. Ways to involve employees and teachers working in educational institutions and libraries in Wikipedia projects have been shown. It is possible to make Wikipedia even more popular and attract new users to it within the framework of cooperation with educational institutions, teachers' unions and libraries.

Description

One of the ways to make Wikipedia more popular and attract a wider user base is to attract young people to it. For this reason, taking into account the concentration of young people mainly in universities and libraries, it is possible to make Wikipedia even more popular by directly cooperating with their employees. In both institutions, there are ample conditions for the promotion of Wikipedia among young people. Because higher schools and libraries serve the development of society and provide education, but are also places where intellectual and world-viewing young people gather. In order to involve educational institutions or teachers' union in cooperation, a consistent complex work should be carried out and several phased plans should be implemented. The main goal of the idea presented to the Wikimania conference is to show the direction of work that can be organized in higher schools, teachers' unions and libraries to attract new users to Wikipedia. These ideas can be grouped as follows:

1. Employees and teachers working in universities and libraries should be explained what Wikipedia is and create interest in them. In order to create such an interest, first of all, the professional interests of the teachers and the organizations they work in should be taken into account. They should be explained the service that Wikipedia can provide in popularizing and expanding the scope of their respective specialty. 2. First of all, work can be done in several directions to attract students to Wikipedia in the institutions where they work for teachers and professors. a) Creation of Wikicubes. b) Organization of Wikipedia methodological centers c) Organizing Wikipedia marathons d) Organizing wiki nights and dispute nights 3. In order to create interest in Wikipedia among young people, teachers and staff need to be informed that Wikipedia is not only a segment of articles, but also of various projects. Especially by pointing out the existence of a project like Wikicommons, it is possible to arouse their interest in Wikipedia.

The idea I presented to the conference is related to the Future of Wikimania and Collaboration themes. Because, in order for Wikipedia to become popular and reach more people, it is important to attract new users to it. Moreover, the idea I presented will serve to strengthen the Cooperation within Wikipedia.
