Abstract & description[edit source]
Abstract[edit source]
A comparison of Quora and the Wikiworld from someone who has been very active in both.
Description[edit source]
I have been involved in Wikipedia since 2007 and Wikimedia Commons, where I have hundreds of thousands more edits, for almost as long. Though it is English Wikipedia where I'm most involved in the community and I'm a bureaucrat. I also have a few edits on various other projects including Wikivoyage and WikiBooks.
A few years ago I ventured onto Quora, a Question and Answer site on the Internet and for a while I got quite active there.
This presentation is a comparison of the very different worlds of Quora and Wikipedia from the perspective of a critical friend of both.
Further details[edit source]
Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
Quora and Wikipedia are based on two very different models of collaboration (Wikimedia Commons almost counts as a third). Comparing these models meets the event theme by looking at different forms of collaboration.
Diversity also comes into the presentation as some of the community variables that are brought together in collaboration, or in conflict.
Qn. What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
Average knowledge about Wikimedia projects or activities
Qn. What is the most appropriate format for this session?
