Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

This is an exposition of the experience in which the open databases on the environment of Chile have been transformed into easily accessible text and images that in a next step been divided and integrated into the articles of the Wikimedia ecosystems dedicated to the local territories of this country.

Description[edit source]

This Project, hosted under the Open Climate collective, aimed to consolidate knowledge about the environmental characteristics of Chile, as well as terrestrial ecosystems and their state of conservation according to the IUCN categories in articles on the Spanish Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects dedicated to the regions and communes of Chile. This has been achieved by processing data from databases using open source software such as QGIS, RStudio and Inkscape which has subsequently been transformed into the original text and images that have already been for each Wikipedia article mentioned above. The session that I propose to present in this Wikimania seeks to expose all the experience raised from this process of collecting, managing and publishing information so that it can be replicated by other users in their own countries.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

This session enhances the three axes from different perspectives, considering each stage of the project over time. When talking about collaboration, the project describes how the available information that has been made freely accessible by public and private institutions (such as the Government of Chile or the National Academy) has allowed taking the first step in the project. Behind it, there is a certain level of information ethics where free access to these databases facilitates collaboration processes when managing projects that seek the common good within the country.

Meanwhile, with the development of the project and the ideation of the methodology for approaching how to distribute and classify territorial information, the diversity of territories in the country is very clearly described, not only due to the vast differences in natural systems but also in how environmental conflict zones, protected areas, and urban areas are distributed, demonstrating a great heterogeneity and diversity of spaces and ways of life.

The result of this project seeks to support the discussion about what to do to have a better future. With the information that this project provides in Wikipedia articles, people will be able to understand the real environmental heritage value that exists in their territories, which could motivate them to generate pressure to protect these common goods, resulting in a better quality of life in the future.
