Abstract[edit source]

This paper harnesses the experiences and real setting of nurturing a new Wikimedia community, showcasing developmental activities through collaborations and wild ideas, the challenges and the need for community-driven initiatives

Description[edit source]

The heart of every community is the inclusive program that identifies the needs of every member. This involves participation, capacity building, social events, and the widening of horizons. Wikimedia in its wisdom creates spaces to leave no one behind with new ideas and thoughts that blend. Indeed, the saying that the bigger the merrier is well suited to a family of Wikimedia community. Wikimedia Anambra Network started operations in September 2022. It announced its coming by creating awareness, inviting members with the aims of learning together, generating and sharing information. The types of members comprised professors, elites, students and entrepreneur. Thus, it was a clear combination of real community with a target population that requires mixing, mashing and blending of activities to capture and sustain the different types of groups. As the months go by, it became imperative that more activities are needed to sustain the members’ interest, ensure willing and ready contributions on the digital content as well as initiate localized activities. This paper highlighted the mixing and mashing of community-driven initiatives in the local network that inspires the members to keep keeping faith with Wikimedia strategies. It showed the participants’ efforts in sharing knowledge and the challenges of keeping the members together. Hence, from community members learning together to the incorporation of social activities and collaborating with other organizations, sustainability seems to be working. There is a need to share experiences and learn from others on the good practices of keeping the members of the community intact and ready to answer to volunteering Wikimedia activities
