Description[edit source]

Wikidata is a free and open knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines. It provides structured data to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and other projects in the Wikimedia movement. In Indonesia, the Wikidata community has been growing steadily over the years, with enthusiastic contributors working on various topics. This leads us for the opportunity to join Wikidata Software Collaboration project, a collaboration between Wikimedia Deutschland and Wikimedia Indonesia.

The Wikidata Software Collaboration project in Wikimedia Indonesia started at July 2022. The project aims to strengthen the Wikidata lexicographical data community in Indonesia and establish a software hub for the Wikimedia movement in the country. Over the course of the project, the team has conducted research on the Wikidata community in Indonesia, engaged with the community through discussions and events, and discussed with the Wikidata development team and local partners.

In this talk, we will provide an overview of the Wikidata Software Collaboration project in Wikimedia Indonesia and highlight some of its findings and activities. We will discuss how the project team has worked to build bridges between the needs of the Wikidata community in Indonesia and relaying it to the Wikidata development teams. We will also share some of the challenges and opportunities that arose during the project's implementation, and outline the project's future plans for sustaining and growing the Wikidata lexicographical data community in Indonesia.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Diversity: There are more than 700 living languages in Indonesia. The project focuses on empowering the Wikidata lexicographical data community in Indonesia, which is a diverse community of contributors who speak different native languages. We also worked with and featured communities with different native languages in our activities.

Collaboration: The Wikidata Software Collaboration project is a collaborative effort that involves working with the Wikidata community in Indonesia, as well as engaging with software development teams and partners both within and outside of Indonesia. The project team has worked to build bridges between these groups to create a more collaborative and sustainable Wikidata lexicographical data ecosystem in Indonesia.

Future: The Wikidata Software Collaboration project is forward-looking, with a focus on establishing a software hub for the Wikimedia movement in Indonesia that can support future growth and development of lexicographical data and its usage for the community in Indonesia. This is what the community and language experts in Indonesia wished to have in the coming years.
