Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

Through the project Wikipedia for all of Sweden, Wikimedia Sverige aims to build local and digital activities across the entire country, recruiting members and creating awareness. The work has started in four counties from Skåne down south to Västerbotten up north, where we seek a variety of partners. Collaboration is key, because that gives us opportunities to reach existing groups of people with a multitude of interests.

Description[edit source]

Holding activities is, of course, not a new thing for the Wikimedia Movement. But creating an offline and online member’s movement with local activities across the country on a large and focused scale, might be.

Wikimedia Sverige has applied for external project funding to finance the project, which spans over almost two years. In four pilot counties (Skåne, Östergötland, Uppsala and Västerbotten), we reach out to a multitude of potential partners. They include everything from universities and folk high schools to associations for youth or older citizens, to museums and libraries, tourist organizations and nature protection groups. Our belief is that where people gather, knowledge exists and we can create Wikimedia enthusiasm. Activities include training sessions, photo marathons, edit-a-thons and events for collecting metadata to improve Wikimedia Commons files.

This presentation aims at inspiring others by sharing our project model, as well as sharing examples from other countries where local activities are facilitated at a large scale. We will approach other affiliates to include their stories in the presentation as well.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

The target groups of the Swedish project are senior citizens, young people and non-men. This is because we have identified that these groups are underrepresented within the association, and we want to engage people of more diverse backgrounds. We also want to build the association stronger for the future, engaging more members and volunteers to create a more robust organization and movement. The core of the project is collaboration, both within the organization and with all of the project partners.
