An English and Spanish teacher and professor. Roxana has lived in the United States of America, Spain and Uruguay. She has taken part of the Wikipedia Education Program in Uruguay and been a mentor in the Wikipedia Education Collab group. She is interested in intercultural competence and communicative cultural competence. She holds a degree in Teaching with ICT from Cambridge University, a teaching degree and a Master's degree in Education from UNED. She believes in the power of open education to create a better society.

Based on the Wikipedia Education Program in Uruguay, the Wikipedia Education Collab, classroom experiences in Spain, student survey and recent research, this lightning talk focuses on learning outcomes and its contribution to a culture of freedom and success. It comprises the conditions for learning with Wikipedia, students expectations and needs analysis, teaching material and learning outcomes.

"Wikipedia in the classroom for a culture of freedom and success" aims at showing:

  • How contributions could make a difference for the quality of Wikipedia articles in the long run
  • The learning expectations and need analysis
  • The conditions for learning
  • The potential for language learning (communicative competence, intercultural competence, language digital competences, linguistic competence, pragmatic competence).
  • The learning objectives, especially to learn how to take wise decisions, become autonomous learners and take responsibility for their actions.
  • The learning outcomes: the Wikipedia articles students created and edited
  • The evaluation process: the teaching material and assessment tools created by the professor to evaluate students' work, process and contribution to the project.
  • A personal reflection on the culture of freedom and sucess in the English classroom

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

It is related with colaboration, diversity and the future of education. Indeed, this Wikipedia project promotes collaborative writing and fosters a culture of integration and understanding. Based on an Action-Based Approach to learning, the students who have taken part in the project have interacted with people from different cultures and have learned by doing and by working in teams.
