Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

A brief overview of what our Grants Administration team does, and for community members to better understand when applying for WMF grants, and what happens to during life cycle of a grant—from submission to post-award.

Description[edit source]

This is an opportunity for the Grants Administration team, new applicants, and returning grantees to share challenges, tips, and new information about international funding trends, restrictions and opportunities in order to receive international funding. We would walk participants through the eligibility process for the three main types of grantees we fund across the grant programs we support across the Foundation, and necessary information that would help inform not only a grantee's ability to receive funding, but also to ensure that our internal processes and best practices are compliant with US regulations. Since WMF's grant programs have taken on different iterations, those changes have also shaped how we assess the financial and reporting requirements for each applicant. We hope to communicate this more clearly, and to seek input for how we can better broadcast that onto wider channels (for example, on Meta-Wiki).

We can also provide some data captured through our grantmaking platform Fluxx to showcase our funding trends over time, and highlight the growing demand for WMF grants.

Further details[edit source]

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

While our grant programs have gone through various iterations over the last 5-7 years, many of the Wikimedia Foundation's requirements for grantmaking have remained consistent. However, with a growing volume of applicants and grantees from all over the world, the challenges to funding them are also increasing due to various geo-political and financial realities. We hope that this session will involve voices that we have not interfaced with to understand and work with them to create better pathways of supporting them to the best of our abilities, and open up opportunities to partner with them in some capacity.
