Abstract & description[edit source]

Abstract[edit source]

This session explores the results of the Structured Data Across Wikipedia (SDAW) program. We’ll also discuss what we learned in the process, the impact we’ve had on the Wikimedia ecosystem, and what that means for editors and readers.

Description[edit source]

The three-year, Sloan funded Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW) program set out to design ways to structure articles and pages to enable new content formats, allow machines to recognize Wikimedia content and suggest relationships to other Wikimedia content, and give Wikimedia users a more inviting, more efficient way to search and find content. The grant period ended on June 30, 2023.

In this session, we will explore the ways in which involved folks were successful in reaching the goals of the SDAW program. We’ll also discuss what we learned in the process, the impact we’ve had on the Wikimedia ecosystem, and what that means for editors and readers. We’ll look at the ways MediaSearch has improved search on Commons; the ways we can now identify information about sections of Wikipedia articles using Section Topics; and the ways we can now suggest suggest images for articles and sections on Wikipedia, all done using Structured Data.

This session will be presented by participants across the SDAW program team, including the WMF Structured Data team; the WMF GLAM team; Wikimedia Portugal; Wiki Editoras Lx; the community members who created the View It! Tool; and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).
