Title: Edit-a-thons in higher education, implementation, competence and skill development opportunities Speaker: Bence Molnár Abstract: The possibilities of edit-a-thons in the higher education will be presented; how they can be used in the translator and interpreter education and help the students acquire media and information literacy skills and key competencies. The Hungarian Shakespeare edit-a-thon, organised annually since 2014, will be presented as an example.
Seminar papers and other academic products written by university students are typically
never utilized outside of the given courses. To change this, the Pázmány Péter Catholic
University, with the Wikimedia Hungary and the Hungarian Shakespeare Committee, organises a Shapespeare themed edit-a-thon every year where English major master students write Wikipedia articles in different languages as their assignments. As part of the 'Academic Communication' course, the students do their own research on the selected topics and prepare their papers just like a classical assignment. At the end of the semester, the students edit and publish them as Wikipedia articles with the help of Wikipedia editors.
During the lecture the opportunities of Wikipedia editing in higher education will be discussed, how it can stimulate student motivation and create active involvement, how it can develop the students' key competencies, and media and information literacy skills. Practical insights and outreach potentials of organising an edit-a-thon will be provided. The possible applications in translator and interpreter education will be also presented. But most importantly it will be told that Wikipedia can be utilised in higher education and edit-a-thons are easier to organise than you think.
