Title
[edit | edit source]Meet Me At The Observatory: How Can We Increase Cultural Diversity On GLAM Content?
Description
[edit | edit source]GLAM content constitutes an essential part of each language cultural background, and its most relevant articles deserve to be on every Wikipedia. In this sense, the Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory project provides data and tools for understanding the degree of coverage of each languages' cultural and geographical context and for helping editors bridge the gaps.
In this short talk I want to give a overview of GLAM and cultural diversity, first, on the extent of GLAM content in each language edition, in order to see whether there are some languages struggling to create it. Second, I want to provide computationally-generated lists of valuable GLAM articles for every language edition and country of the world. This way it becomes easier to find articles to translate and cover a minimum of content of every other language and therefore improve Wikipedia's cultural diversity in terms of GLAM.
Finally, I want to stress out the importance of working in GLAM generally and with a cultural diversity perspective in particular. Because even though pop culture occupies the top pos ition of most read articles in most of the language editions, I believe that when creating Wikipedia we are responsible for explaining the cultural and artistic heritage from those generations that preceded us.
Relationship to the theme
[edit | edit source]This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
In this lightning talk I want to frame the problem of cultural diversity on GLAM. This relates to the sustainable development goals with improving education quality (SDG 4) and reducing inequalities (SDG 10) in general.
Session outcomes
[edit | edit source]At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
* See the most relevant articles about GLAM in every Wikipedia language edition
* Discover which languages do not represent a minimum of articles about their GLAM
* Find missing images in your GLAM articles which exist in other language editions
