2019:Meetups/Sami language course

From Wikimania
Sign in Norwegian and South Sami outside a library in Norway.

The Sámi languages is a group of about 10 languages spoken by the Sami people in northernmost Europe. The languages have official status in parts of Norway, Finland and all of Sweden. While it has no official status in Russia, it is spoken in its very northwesternmost parts.

As 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages, representatives from Wikimedia Sverige, Norge and Finland thought it would be a nice idea to arrange a very basic course in the Sami languages. The course will be held by Yupik, a language researcher, a non-native speaker of Northern Sami and admin and bureaucrat on Northern Sami language Wikipedia.

The Norwegian Sami Parliament will let us use a phrasebook with words and phrases in Northern Sami, Lule Sami and Southern Sami, that will be made available in English. Hopefully, we will also get it under a free license, so participants can learn, study - and add the words to Wiktionary!
