2019:Partnerships/Partners Love Wikimedia! A discussion on partnerships in the movement
This is an Accepted submission for the Partnerships space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
[edit | edit source]Partnerships play a key role in the movement. There is a clear consensus that in order to achieve our 2030 strategic direction, we need to work closely with players across sectors that support our mission of open and free knowledge. SDG # 17 also acknowledges the importance of strategic partnerships, focusing on strengthening global collaborations to support and achieve the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda. Throughout our movement's history, different stakeholders - from global non-profits to local companies and ministries - have been interested in collaborating with affiliates, the Foundation, and the community at large. As these efforts continue to expand and grow, and in the context of our ongoing discussion around partnerships in the movement, this session will bring together current and future partners in different sectors and the community to discuss the value of collaboration, and how both the Wikimedia movement and its partners thrive when working together. This conversation will also address how these collaborations contribute to achieving the SDGs, by partners and Wikimedia at large.
Join us in a panel discussion with different partners across sectors and geographies, as we go over the reasoning behind the partnership work we do, their interests in collaborating with the movement, learnings, and best practices. The panel will include representatives from GLAM (TBD), international industry organizations (GSMA), technology companies (Google and KaiOS), international organizations (UN's OHCHR), government, and non-profit sector (TBD). (Participants may change pending confirmation and availability for attendance).
Relationship to the theme
[edit | edit source]This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
SDG # 17 seeks to strengthen global partnerships to support and achieve the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda, bringing together national governments, the international community, civil society, the private sector and other actors. This session wants to highlight the importance of this Goal, and its clear relationship with the Wikimedia Movement and its 2030 strategic direction, using specific examples and experiences of current and prospective partners of the movement and their commitment to Free Knowledge.
Session outcomes
[edit | edit source]At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
Participants will learn directly from different stakeholders (current and prospective partners of WMF and affiliates across sectors) their views and experience around the importance of collaborating with Wikimedia. There will be an open conversation about their experience, and what learnings can participants bring back home to empower local relevant players to work and partner with them and the movement at large. Attendants to the session can also share ideas to work with the participating panel in their local context.
