Abstract

The Wikimedian of the Year is an annual award that honours contributors to Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. It aims to highlight major achievements within the Wikimedia movement in the previous year. The tradition dates back to 2011 and has evolved since then in dynamic ways to welcome and celebrate Wikimedian volunteers from different backgrounds and experiences. This year’s celebration is bigger and more inclusive than ever before, recognizing seven exceptional contributors to the Wikimedia movement in six categories, including Newcomer of the Year, 20th Year Honouree, Rich Media and Tech contributors, and Honourable Mentions, as well as the Wikimedian of the Year.

From 13:30-14:30 we will have the Wikipedian of the Year celebration presentation, with original music. From 14:30 to 15:00 join us in the community village to continue to meet and chat with the awardees.

Wikimedian of the Year

A beloved celebration expanded, in addition to the titleholder of Wikimedian of the Year and Honourable Mentions, find out who will win the Newcomer of the Year, Rich Media and Tech Innovator, as well as the 20th Year Honouree.

• Wikimedian of the Year - Dating back to 2011, the Wikimedian of the Year award is an annual tradition to honour the efforts of one of the movement’s exceptional and inspirational contributors.
• Newcomer of the Year - An initiative started in 2021 - the Wikimedian of the Year Newcomer of the Year award recognizes an exceptional Wikimedian who joined the movement in the past one to two years and already made a significant contribution.
• 20th Year Honouree - An initiative started in 2021, the year of Wikipedia’s 20th birthday, the Wikimedian of the Year  20th Year Honouree award celebrates a Wikimedian who has been a part of our movement since the early years and has been a significant force in growing our global communities.
• Tech Innovator winner - An initiative started in 2021 - the Wikimedian of the Year Tech Innovator award recognizes an exceptional Wikimedian who has focused on building and improving the infrastructure that powers free knowledge. The technology developer community that helps support the movement is often behind the scenes. It takes many to keep the lights blinking.
• Rich Media winner - An initiative started in 2021 - the Wikimedian of the Year Rich Media award recognizes an exceptional Wikimedian who contributes non-text content to our projects, including photography, video, and sound. These media constitute a vital and growing part of our movement and user experience across projects.
• Honourable Mentions - The Wikimedian of the Year Honourable Mention award recognizes exceptional Wikimedians who already have a strong presence in the movement, as well as public exposure such as press coverage, local recognition, and national titles.
