Abstract[edit source]

In this dissertation, we propose to tell the experience of the MOOC "Teaching with Wikipedia: tools to work with the free encyclopedia in secondary education", carried out by the Education and Human Rights Program of Wikimedia Argentina for teachers in the province of Rio Negro in 2022 and 2023.

Description[edit source]

In this dissertation, we propose to tell the experience of the MOOC "Teaching with Wikipedia: tools to work with the free encyclopedia in secondary education", carried out by the Education and Human Rights Program of Wikimedia Argentina for teachers in the province of Rio Negro in 2022 and 2023.

The course was designed based on the series of booklets "Teaching with Wikipedia". In it, we propose that secondary school teachers get to know Wikipedia in depth and that they can think of it as a pedagogical tool in several aspects, where editing the encyclopedia is just one of them. From this course, we think about how to use Wikipedia to: work with primary and secondary sources in the classroom, analyze the collaborative construction of knowledge, improve our online research tools and work with images, among many other things.

The proposal for this MOOC is based on a partnership with the Ministry of Education and Human Rights of the Province of Río Negro. Both editions were carried out in the virtual campus of the Ministry and the call and registration was only for teachers of that province. For our Program, this was the first experience of these characteristics and it implied great learning for us to think about how to federalize our proposals.

What does it imply to work in alliance with a provincial Ministry? How to adapt a MOOC proposal to a particular locality? What lessons and challenges arise from this experience? We are interested in sharing these and other questions with those who participate in the dissertation, hoping that each participant, at the end, can take away some ideas to think about their own MOOCs and educational projects.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

We believe that this session can be related to the themes of collaboration and diversity. On the one hand, it involved an experience of collaborative work with a Ministry of Education, which led us to have to coordinate our work with another team, to combine criteria, to adapt to their possibilities and requirements as well as to be able to propose our own. We believe that these types of experiences, with their positive aspects and challenges, are important to share with other people, User Groups and Chapters within the Movement, in order to continue building together positive ways of collaborating with our alliances. On the other hand, in terms of diversity, this project is part of the programmatic lines of Wikimedia Argentina, as it seeks to diversify our proposals, federalizing activities in order to reach new audiences and contribute to the diverse construction of content in Wikimedia projects. The teachers who participated in this experience improved articles related to their communities and local realities and this allowed them to think of ways to work these same contents with their students. We believe that this is a possible way to contribute to the diversity of the contents.
