Session title: School Wiki - A wiki of schools using Mediawiki

Session type: Lightning talk
Track: Education
Language: en

My session will share our experience in building a wiki of the schools in Kerala using MediaWiki, Wikipedia templates, scripts, and modules. This wiki was created by the Department of Education in Kerala and has been edited by students and teachers in Kerala. Our goal was to publish various forms of creative work, such as drawings, stories, and photographs, created by students in Kerala. This is a very good example of how we can use a wiki ecosystem to enrich education.

Description

[edit | edit source]

In this session, we will provide a detailed account of our experience in building a SchoolWiki in Kerala using wiki templates, scripts, and modules. It is built using MediaWiki software, hosting educational content created by students, teachers, alumni, and the public. We will discuss the challenges and successes we encountered while creating this wiki, and share our strategies for engaging students and teachers in the editing process. Our session will highlight the also importance of using open-source tools and platforms to support education and knowledge sharing. We will showcase the various forms of creative work that have been published on the wiki, and discuss the impact it has had on the education community in Kerala. Our aim is to inspire and motivate attendees to consider using wikis and other open-source tools in their own educational settings, and to provide practical guidance on how to do so effectively.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

Our session directly relates to the event themes of Collaboration of the Open by connecting the educational system in a state to the wiki ecosystem. By introducing students to the concept of open knowledge and collaboration, we aim to inspire and motivate them to develop an open collaborative knowledge ecosystem in the future.

Our goal is to not only educate attendees about the benefits of the wiki ecosystem in education but also to provide practical guidance on how to effectively integrate these tools into their own educational systems. By fostering a culture of collaboration and openness in the knowledge ecosystem, we hope to empower attendees to create a more inclusive and innovative educational system.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
