2024 talk:Meetups/Commons Categorisers
Add topicWhat is planned
[edit source]What did you plan for this meetup? As there are currently no people asigned for this would I be fine for you if me make this a more general Commons user meetup? GPSLeo (talk) 13:06, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yup, since there is no programe I would hardly come. The programme could promote an interest of people. Juandev (talk) 21:05, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Waldyrious are you fine is we broaden the scope of this? If it is okay for you I would also ask the WMF support for Commons team to join. GPSLeo (talk) 07:57, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- I am not leading this session, actually. I just created this page to allow people to sign up for it and add an overview and topics they'd want to discuss.
- Speaking of topics, I don't think it's OK to expand the scope of this meetup. For context, it comes in the sequence of a similar meetup that happened in Wikimania 2023 (and possible previous ones?). The idea, as far as I understand, is for people who work frequently in categorizing and recategorizing files in Commons (and creating/editing/organizing categories) to discuss common challenges, upcoming changes, relationship with structured data, etc.
- I'll take the opportunity to ping the person who added the meetup to the table (Msz2001), the organizer/speaker in last year's meetup (MB-one) in case they'd want to sign up and/or edit the page with additional details. If someone recalls the list of participants in last year's meetup, please do ping them here as well! Waldyrious (talk) 09:49, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- By the way, there was ironically no Commons category for the Commons categorizers meetups 😅 So I just created one: commons:Category:Commons categorizer meetups. In doing so I discovered that there were at least two other editions of the meetup besides last year's: one in 2017 and one in 2018. There have probably been more. Waldyrious (talk) 10:01, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Waldyrious.
- The first Meetup was indeed in 2016. MB-one (talk) 10:29, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- I've added it because I've got it from the Program team who presumably got it during the session submission phase. I have no specific details on this session available. Msz2001 (talk) 10:37, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. That would indeed be to much to combine with other topics. GPSLeo (talk) 11:18, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

- There is no fixed agenda. The meetup is traditionally open to anyone who's interested in organizing media on Wikimedia Commons and making it more accessible. Not only through categorization, but also SDC, templates, etc. If you have questions, remarks or ideas regarding the topic, you are welcome to participate. MB-one (talk) 10:27, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Who is Commons Categoriser
[edit source]I wonder how the Commons Categoriser differ from normal Commons uploader, who have to categories his files also. Juandev (talk) 21:04, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- There are editors who frequently work in mass (re)categorizing files, creating categories, organizing the tree/graph of categories, etc. It's not just about adding categories to one's own files or occasionally adding a category to a random file. Hope that helps! --Waldyrious (talk) 09:53, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Juandev in theory you are absolutely right. Everyone who uploads media to Commons should also categorize their uploads. However, the vast majority of media files are grossly undercategorized. That's where the Categorizers are helping to make media files visible and accessible through further categorization and/or SDC tags. MB-one (talk) 10:50, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Commons community discussion about content organization
[edit source]Hi all! I learned from the latest Tech News edition that there's going to be a couple of Commons community discussions focused on content organization, on 21 November 2024 at 8:00 UTC and 16:00 UTC.
By @MB-one's suggestion, I'm using this space to ping the people who were involved in the Wikimania 2024 meetup (according to this discussion page, its main page, and the etherpad) in case they are interested: @GPSLeo @Juandev @Bahnfrend @Msz2001 @BugWarp @Islahaddow @Harmonia Amanda @Mike Peel @Albinfo @Ocrho @Martin Kraft @Alicia Fagerving (WMSE)
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend at either time, but I hope some of you can! Cheers, Waldyrious (talk) 23:15, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
