- Currency: Kenya's official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).
M-Pesa, a mobile money transfer platform, is king in Nairobi for any small or major payments. To use M-Pesa you need a local SIM card. Safaricom is the primary provider. You can easily purchase a Safaricom SIM card at the airport or at any official Safaricom store. Don’t forget to bring your passport, as it’s required for SIM registration.
Major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted as well, but having cash or M-Pesa for small purchases is helpful, as small traders do not run bank cards. ATMs and currency exchange services are readily available and some (in major shopping malls) can dispense USD or Euro.

Insurance
If you have a scholarship from the Wikimedia Foundation, you will be provided medical insurance that covers travel outside your home country during the period of the conference. Domestic travellers should use their regular health insurance. Please refer to the scholarship award letter for further information.
Kumaa do Nairobi
- By Air: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is Nairobi’s primary airport, with connections to major cities worldwide. The national airline is Kenya Airways (KQ), which is part of the Sky team Alliance and flies to major destinations in and out of Africa.
- By Road: If traveling from neighboring countries in the East Africa Region, buses such as Easy Coach and Tahmeed link Nairobi to cities like Kampala, Dar es Salaam, and Kigali.
Transportation in Nairobi
- Arriving from the airport for scholars and attendees: Airport shuttle buses will be provided for scholars and any other attendees who would like to make use of our airport shuttles. Info will come via email to registered in-person attendees in July for them to sign up to the airport shuttles. The shuttle buses will pick up and drop off at all the terminals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
- Shuttle buses provided to official events: There will also be shuttle buses taking people on the tours listed and to/from the closing event.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: Uber and Little Cab are reliable and affordable. Avoid Uber chap chap(economy) at all times, the vehicle quality is often wanting and drivers are a bit unprofessional. Go for Comfort or at the very least Uber X. Same to Little Cab, avoid economy rides and opt for Comfort.
- Matatus: These hip and colorful mini buses are a cultural experience but may be overwhelming for first-timers. Some routes are also notorious with pick-pockets. Consider this option when you are in the company of local Wikimedians.
- Boda Bodas: Motorcycle taxis are quick to avoid traffic but less safe—we discourage use by foreigners who are new in Nairobi, as they are best navigated with some local expertise.
- Walking: Avoid walking alone at night or for long distances.
Safety Tips
- Avoid displaying valuables in public.
- Only use online-hailing taxis, especially at night.
- Be cautious when exploring unfamiliar neighborhoods—consult locals or your hotel for advice.
- Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

Venue
The gathering will happen at multiple venues throughout Gigiri, a small and easily navigable neighborhood, to allow participants an opportunity to experience diverse offerings and the warmth of Kenyan hospitality. Wikimania will be hybrid, offering both in-person and virtual participation.
Each of the different in-person venues have their own individual capacities. Overall, in person this Wikimania will be similar in size to Wikimania Singapore because of venue restrictions. For the event we have had a total of 725 places to fill including scholars and other attendees. The final number of attendees may vary slightly depending on cancellations and last minute additions.
