- What is Wikimania?
Wikimania is the annual conference celebrating all the free knowledge projects hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation – Commons, MediaWiki, Meta-Wiki, Wikibooks, Wikidata, Wikinews, Wikipedia, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikispecies, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wiktionary – with three days of conferences, discussions, meetups, training, and workshops. Hundreds of volunteers and Free Knowledge leaders from around the world gather to discuss issues, report on new projects and approaches, and exchange ideas.
- What is the Wikimedia Foundation?
The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports and operates Wikipedia and its sister free knowledge projects. Wikipedia is the world’s free knowledge resource, spanning more than 40 million articles across nearly 300 languages. Every month, more than 200,000 people edit Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, collectively creating and improving knowledge that is accessed by more than 1 billion unique devices every month. This all makes Wikipedia one of the most popular web properties in the world. Based in San Francisco, California, the Wikimedia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity that is funded primarily through donations and grants.
Wikimania 2019 will be held at Stockholm University, Sweden, from 14th to 18th August 2019. The program design page further explains the setup of the conference.
- What is Wikimania 2019 about?
Have you ever thought about the Wikimedia movement in terms of sustainable development? How free knowledge could have the potential to radically change peoples’ lives? Or how we through cooperation, innovation and passion actually could build a better world? Perhaps you haven’t, but we want to think about it and start a conversation.
The theme of Wikimania 2019 will be: Stronger together: Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals. The theme will permeate the program and guide our communication, cooperation and outward work.
