About
[edit | edit source]Wikimania 2019 is organized around Spaces, as explained at 2019:Program design. I propose to complement the physical spaces with a remote one and am happy to help lead this, ideally with a co-lead on-site. For the moment, this is just a draft, and improvements are most welcome. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 03:03, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
The purpose of the remote space would be to provide mechanisms by which on-site attendees can interact with remote attendees and vice-versa, as well as for remote attendees to interact amongst themselves. The basic setup would be for the remote space to be primarily online, but with a physical representation (think a dedicated table) in each of the physical spaces. While some of its functionality may thus be bound to these physical representations, most of its functionality is envisaged to be available throughout the event and in any time zone, possibly with a bit of additional time before or after the on-site event.
The motivation for creating a remote space has multiple components: it can
- facilitate the participation of some who might not otherwise be able to attend
- help improve documentation of Wikimania-related activities
- enhance the ratio of community versus environmental impact
- save travel budgets and time at the global level
Wikimania program leader proposal form
[edit | edit source]This section replicates the questions of the form and serves to draft and preserve the responses for the remote space submission. Required fields come with an asterisk.
Public summary
[edit | edit source]The information in these four fields, and only these four fields, will be published on the conference Wiki at "Program Design: Submitted proposals for Spaces": https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program_design#Submitted_proposals_for_Spaces
Proposed topic title *
[edit | edit source]What is the name of the Space for Wikimania that you are proposing to lead?
Short description *
[edit | edit source]In a couple of sentences, describe your proposed Space. Include some example presentation topic areas. For example, those listed at: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program_design#Examples
Name/Username of leader(s) *
[edit | edit source]What is your name/username, and the name of your partners in making this proposal? It is assumed that each Space will be coordinated by at least two leaders. If you are an employee of the WMF/Affiliate, please select co-leader from the volunteer community.
Website *
[edit | edit source]Please list a URL through which at least one of the leaders listed above can be contacted by other attendees wishing to discuss your proposal. This could be your Wikimedia userpage, twitter account, personal website, employee profile page...
Non-public sections
[edit | edit source]Email address *
[edit | edit source]This will be the primary means for the Wikimania core team to contact you.
Affiliation
[edit | edit source]Are you, and your co-leader(s), formally affiliated with an organisation, for the purposes of this proposal? For example, is this topic area related to your work with a Wikimedia Affiliate, company, or academic organisation?
Intended audience
[edit | edit source]What kind of people would you expect to be interested in your topic area? What could they learn and what would they contribute? How many people do you think would attend your Space (Wikimania expects to attract 1,200 people in total)?
Proposed session description *
[edit | edit source]As described in the "program design" document https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program_design we wish the program Spaces to be used in a way that is "future-oriented, collaborative, active, and focused on practical problem-solving". If your proposal is accepted, how will you achieve this? Please describe any specific session ideas you have; and if you have any particular people/organisations (especially those outside of Wikimedia) that you wish to proactively-invite to participate. We expect that specific plans will change over time, but the more details and examples you can give now, the easier it is to understand what you are proposing.
Keynote session
[edit | edit source]Each topic specific Space will also be able to nominate a "keynote" presentation to be given in the main presentation hall. This would be filmed and also serve as the single track features a wide variety of high-quality and engaging content. Do you already have a suggestion for who, or what specific topic, would be your Space's "keynote"?
Duration
[edit | edit source]Wikimania is a three-day conference (with some plenary sessions at the beginning and end). How long do you expect your program Space would run for? You may not be offered the time you request, but it is useful to know what you would prefer.
Relationship to the Sustainable Development Goals
[edit | edit source]How do you intend to link the sessions within your topic area to the theme of the conference? Which SDGs are particularly relevant? A description of all the SDGs and how they relate to Wikimedia is available at: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Theme/FAQ
