2019:Environmental sustainability/Climate change on Wikipedia
![]() | This submission will be presented as part of the Panel on coverage of environmental topics. |

Description
[edit | edit source]Climate change is a crisis that affects every person on earth. How do we talk about climate change on Wikipedia? This lightning talk will present a preliminary analysis of climate change-related articles on English Wikipedia and will propose five ways that we could analyze related articles across languages:
- comprehensiveness
- accessibility
- scientific accuracy
- currency
- tone
Currently, on English Wikipedia, there is no climate change or global warming-specific WikiProject (it is a subset of WikiProject Environment) which makes analysis of articles more difficult. Are there ways we can set up structures or projects on Wikipedia to enable editors to improve these articles?

Relationship to the theme
[edit | edit source]This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
Arguably, climate change is a topic that every language edition of Wikipedia should be focused on curating and improving, as it affects the sustainability of every other part of the world and human life. Topically, it relates to the environment sustainable development goals.
Session outcomes
[edit | edit source]At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
I hope to inspire attendees to conduct similar analyses in their own languages, and to inspire new projects and article improvement efforts focusing specifically on climate change and global warming.

Session type
[edit | edit source]Each Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:
- lightning talk - I am proposing this as a 5 minute lightning talk, perhaps with a 5 or 10 minute Q&A. This is really a proposal of an idea / analysis framework rather than a report on fully finished work, so I do not (yet) have enough material to fill a full 20 minute talk; if this is given a 30 minute slot I would split the time and use some as an in-person brainstorming/work session for people to set up projects in their own languages. This could also be a poster if there is no room for a talk.
Requirements
[edit | edit source]The session will work best with these conditions:
- Room: no preference
- Audience: any; Wikipedia editors with moderate to extensive experience
- Recording: yes
