2019:Poster session/Building the Wikigraphists community in India
This is an Accepted submission for the Poster space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
[edit | edit source]The Graphic Lab helps to improve all graphical content used by Wikimedia projects stored on the Wikimedia Commons. Wikigraphists are users who are able to create/edit vector illustrations and process images for better quality and do other graphics work for the benefit of the community. Since all these require specific skills, knowledge of complicated tools such as Inkscape, Illustrator, LightRoom etc. we only have a few Wikigraphists on-Wiki.
To reduce this capacity gap, two major projects were taken up to build a community of Wikigraphists in India. These are the Wikigraphists Bootcamp (2018 India) and the SVG Translation Campaign 2019, both of which were successful in achieving their objectives. The former one was a dedicated training for around 20 Indic Wikimedians from 11 different language communities. They were trained on vector graphics and using Inkscape to create/edit vector illustrations. The latter project is a national level translation campaign, in which 194 users from 19 Indic languages came together for a 38-day long campaign, and created about 2,600 SVG files (translations).
The poster will feature both these activities, and also encourage the viewers to take up similar efforts in their communities.
