2021:Submissions/Chat
This is an area for folks to discuss or coordinate submission ideas for Wikimania.
GLAM
[edit | edit source]In previous Wikimanias, we've had formal tracks or "conference within a conference" related to GLAM. (See 2019:GLAM) This year, the unit of programming for different Movement Affiliates or thematic groups is 90 minutes. That is a bit short for the enormous amount of work and interests for the GLAM Wiki community. But I could see a number of 90 minute blocks that would still be engaging different communities:
- State of GLAM Wiki in 2021 - a session could be a roundtable discussion and lightning talks around experiences:
- Quick roundup of GLAM developments in 2021 (10 mins)
- Update from GLAM team at WMF (10 mins)
- Lightning talks of 5 minutes each (40 mins) - Wikimedians in Residence, institutional efforts, problems that need solving
- Discussion on future of GLAM Wiki (30 mins)
PROPOSED with link here
- Structured Data on Commons - talk about Wikidata and SDC in the context of GLAMs, since they tend to be the ones using it at scale and addressing modeling issues across a wide domain
- Best practices with SDC (15 mins)
- Showcase of projects and efforts (30 mins)
- Update on future direction of SDC (15 mins)
- Discussion (30 mins)
PROPOSED with link here
- Tools and tech development for GLAM - discuss the tools and tech around GLAM work as it exists now, a wishlist of needs and a timeline forward
- State of tech tools (20 mins)
- Q&A (10 mins)
- Tutorials (20 x 3 mins) - Advanced OpenRefine, PAWS/Pywikibot, SDC, others?
NOT PROPOSED - a possible candidate for Unconference or Hackathon, given the crowded Wikimania main schedule
Possible constituents/affiliates

- Grupo de Usuários Wiki Movimento Brasil ("Wiki Movement Brazil User Group"), organizing GLAM Wiki conference 2022
- Wikimedia Foundation GLAM team
- GLAM Wiki groups (Telegram, Facebook, etc)
- Wiki World Heritage User Group
- External groups
- OpenGLAM
- Creative Commons/Hack4OpenGLAM
- Internet Archive
- Europeana
More views are welcome on how we might coordinate to have a few submissions around the GLAM theme. - Fuzheado (talk) 16:27, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- I would very much like to also see GLAM submissions around this theme:
- Underrepresented knowledge - discuss important topics related to the types and formats of content shared by GLAM, such as accessibility, diversity, traditional knowledge, decolonization, and so on.
- Showcase of projects and efforts (30 mins)
- Guidelines from users experienced with these topics or coming from these groups (30 mins)
- Discussion (30 mins)
- Underrepresented knowledge - discuss important topics related to the types and formats of content shared by GLAM, such as accessibility, diversity, traditional knowledge, decolonization, and so on.
- This is a suggestion, of course, but I think these are important topics for the GLAM-Wiki community to discuss. I believe it might be in the interest of OpenGLAM, AvoinGLAM, Hack4OpenGLAM, as well as a few different affiliates and the WMF GLAM team. GFontenelle (WMF) (talk) 05:22, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
- GLAMAR: I just created a submission suggesting that the Wikimedia culture can enhance the prospects for world peace by encouraging advocacy and research organizations (GLAMAR) to hire Wikimedian(s) in Residence to recruit, train and manage volunteers to improve Wikipedia and crowdsource research on Wikiversity. They can do this by helping each party to conflict understand their opposition, thereby making it harder for leaders to be stampeded or to stampede their followers into counterproductive actions. Comments? DavidMCEddy (talk) 20:48, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Citations
[edit | edit source]It would be good to have a session on the state and future of citations. I could imagine this being a collaboration from on-wiki and off-wiki groups:
- WikiCite
- Wikimedia + Libraries user group
- Internet Archive
Any other ideas welcome. -- Fuzheado (talk) 18:13, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Opening of public (media) archives and (open) rich media content?
- Partnering with public broadcasters and non-profit media productions? -- Zblace (talk) 17:25, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, I had created this submission: "WikiCite - Recent achievements, what happens next?". LWyatt (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- What would it take to translate w:Template:Cite Q from English into Spanish and German? It's available in French. Someone told me that the Spanish-language Wikipedia did not allow the use of Wikidata. I don' know why.
- Similarly, what would it take to allow w:Template:Cite Q in Wikimedia.org and Wikiquote.org? I tried to use it in 2019:Partnerships/Volunteers needed to develop noncommercial social media to save civilization and couldn't. I also tried to cite wikidata:Q104870116 in Wikiquote:Simón Bolívar and es:Wikiquote:Simón Bolívar, without success.
- Commons:File:U.S. incarceration rate since 1925.svg includes two citations to Wikidata items, but one of them doesn't display properly. I should probably take this item to a Hackathon, but using WikiCite in other Wikimedia Foundation Wikis might require more than more than what could be accomplished in a Hackathon, at least regarding translating w:Template:Cite Q from English into Spanish.
- ??? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 21:16, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Click here to see a proposal for a workshop (45 minutes) on this topic. Comments, suggestions for improvement, will be welcomed. DavidMCEddy (talk) 13:59, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
Wikimedia 2030
[edit | edit source]It's been about 4 years since we had an outline strategy for what we want to achieve by 2030. How much progress have we made? What are the challenges that we should tackle in the next year or two?
- Cross-cultural ideological conflict - I'm making a submission about how existing ethno-political conflicts that line up with language boundaries are putting "reliable sources" into conflict with "knowledge equity". I want to open a discussion on how to tackle this, possibly by making Wikimedia do more knowledge creation. (Pretalx link) Deryck Chan (talk) 13:33, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Learnings from pandemic? Normal(ity/ised)? Norms, methods and tools we need to question? --Zblace (talk) 17:20, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
Future of Wikimania
[edit | edit source]A session discussing the future of Wikimania is being planned by the organizers of Wikimania, but will be open to all. Feel free to add any ideas for discussion below.
- How is Wikimania currently run? How is the "venue" or format selected?
- Who is on the Wikimania steering committee right now, and does it need to be changed?
- What are the current 2022 plans for Wikimania?
- What things about Wikimania work well? What things don't and should be changed?
About the duration of the lectures (Movement groups and affiliates)
[edit | edit source]Hello, we (Amical Wikimedia) would like to submit at least one abstract (or probably two) for the Wikimania 2021 event but there is only the 3 x lectures option when trying to submit the first lecture (we are not still sure about the second one). Could you please tell me how to do it in an efficient and clear way? And is there a way to separate them in case there is a second lecture? Thanks in advance. Have a good week. Claudi/Amical's treasurer/Capsot (talk) 21:58, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- My understanding is that the format is flexible. Just submit with the format you want and that should be fine. We can always sort it out later. -- Fuzheado (talk) 11:46, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
In-person events
[edit | edit source]I've just created a wiki-page to list all offline / in-person / "physical" Wikimania events. If you're organising an in-person local meetup, add it here: 2021:In-person events --Deryck Chan (talk) 15:55, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
