Voraussetzungen für die Einreise nach Polen
Wer mit einem Reisepass von außerhalb des Schengen-Raums nach Polen einreist, sollte sich darauf vorbereiten, dass er die folgenden Dinge zur Hand hat:
- Ein gültiger Reisepass. Er darf nicht älter als zehn Jahre sein und sollte noch mindestens drei Monate, empfohlen sechs Monate, über das geplante Ausreisedatum aus dem Schengen-Raum hinaus gültig sein.
- Leere Seiten im Reisepass. Dein Reisepass muss mindestens zwei leere Seiten für den Einreisestempel haben.
- Ein gültiges Schengen-Visum. Du musst dein Schengen-Visum bei dir tragen, wenn du durch den Schengen-Raum reist. Normalerweise ist dein Visum in deinem Reisepass eingeklebt, so dass diese beiden Dokumente Hand in Hand gehen. (Weitere Informationen zur Beantragung von Visa findest du auf einer separaten Seite).
- Nachweis über den Zweck der Einreise. Auch wenn dies nicht für alle Inhaber/innen eines Nicht-Visums erforderlich ist, sollten die Teilnehmer/innen einen Nachweis mit sich führen, aus dem hervorgeht, dass sie an Wikimania teilnehmen werden. Teilnehmende an Wikimania können Einladungsschreiben von der Wikimedia Foundation und Wikimedia Polen anfragen, indem sie eine E-Mail an wikimania
wikimedia.org mit dem Betreff “Wikimania Invitation Letter Request” schicken. - Nachweis über ausreichende finanzielle Mittel. Ein Dokument, das beweist, dass du über genügend finanzielle Mittel verfügst, um in den Schengen-Raum einzureisen. Für Polen ist dieser Betrag ein Mindestguthaben von PLN 300[1] für drei Tage plus PLN 75 für jeden weiteren Tag, nachweisbar durch einen ausgedruckten Kontoauszug. Du kannst auch einen Arbeits- oder Sponsorennachweis vorlegen, den die Wikimedia Foundation den Stipendiaten aushändigt.
- Nachweis des Rückflugs Drucke deine Reiseroute aus, um zu sehen, wann du abfliegst.
Nach Kattowitz kommen
Die empfohlene Art, nach Kattowitz zu kommen, ist mit dem Flugzeug oder dem Zug.
Reisen mit dem Flugzeug
Kattowitz wird von einem internationalen Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport (KTW / EPKT) bedient. Er ist der viertgrößte Flughafen in Polen und liegt etwa 30 km von Kattowitz entfernt. Die Strecke vom Flughafen in die Stadt wird von ÖPNV-Bussen und Taxis bedient.
Du könntest auch einen Flug nach Warschau oder Krakau (die größten polnischen Flughäfen) buchen und dann mit dem Zug nach Kattowitz fahren. Die Fahrt vom Flughafen Warschau dauert 3-4 Stunden und von Krakau etwa 90 Minuten. Für beide Fahrten ist ein Umsteigen an einem der Hauptbahnhöfe in Warschau oder Krakau erforderlich.
Zugfahren
Es gibt eine ganze Reihe von Zügen, die Polens westliche und südliche Grenzen überqueren und Kattowitz z.B. mit Berlin, Prag und Wien direkt verbinden. Weitere internationale Verbindungen sind mit Umsteigen möglich.
Der Bahnhof von Kattowitz liegt 1,5 km vom Veranstaltungsort der Wikimania 2024 entfernt.

Climate
Poland lies in a humid continental climate zone. The mean temperature in August during the day is 25°C (76°F) and at night 13°C (55°F), although it can occasionally get hotter, reaching up to 30°C (86°F). You should be prepared for some variability in weather, including the possibility of occasional rain. On average, there are 12 rainy days in August with about 75mm (3in) of precipitation in the whole month. People with sensitive skin should consider bringing a sunblock.
It's a good idea to pack lightweight clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses for the warm days, but also bring along a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or if the weather turns unexpectedly chilly.
SIM cards
Poland is part of the European Union so that EU/EEA residents can use cellular services according to the Roam like at home principles with no or almost none additional costs (please consult your carrier for limitations regarding fair use policy etc.).
If you want to buy a SIM card after arriving, you can do so in a store in the arrivals terminal at the Katowice Airport. It is mandatory to present a passport or ID card in order to register the SIM card. You can do it in carriers' stands in e.g. shopping malls or in the stores that sell them.
You should be prepared to see offers like 5000 GB of internet on the SIM card covers, they usually refer to amount of data you'll get during a whole year. Please check whether you have to perform any action to get the indicated data packet when buying the SIM card. All main carriers offer a mobile app for Android and iOS you can use to manage the service.
If you want to buy the card later, they are available in convenience stores around the city. In case of any troubles, all four carriers have their stands in the shopping mall next to Katowice railway station.
Money
Cashless payments are very popular in Poland. You can pay by card at almost all places—be it small shops or supermarkets. If you want to exchange money after coming to Poland, there are money exchange points at the airports as well as in the city center.
The most common foreign currencies accepted are: Euro (EUR), British pound (GBP) and US dollar (USD). Usually you may also find others in the currency exchange offices, especially the European ones.
