The WikiOrchestra will perform a short piece of Polish music at the Wikimania 2024 opening and/or closing ceremonies. Please let us know if you would like to join!
What is the WikiOrchestra?[edit | edit source]
The WikiOrchestra is an international group of musician Wikimedians who come together to perform a short piece of Polish music for the Wikimania opening and/or closing ceremonies.
Why is there a WikiOrchestra?[edit | edit source]
Traditionally, the Wikimania opening and/or closing ceromonies include a 'cultural exhibition' of music and/or dance typical to the location hosting Wikimania that year.
In the spirit of this year's Wikimania theme, "Collaboration of the Open", we will bring a new and collaborative approach to this tradition by inviting members of the community to join the 'WikiOrchestra' to perform a short piece of Polish music during the opening and/or closing ceremonies together.
The 'WikiEulenOrchester' is a concept that has already become a tradition at WikiCon, the annual conference of the German-language Wikipedia community, since its first performance in 2017.
The WikiOrchestra will also honour the city of Katowice, which was formally recognised as a "City of Music" through the UNESCO "Creative Cities" scheme in 2015.
What kind of music will be played?[edit | edit source]
Depending on the musicians who sign up, we will play a selection from the following repertoire:
- a piece by a famous Polish composer
- a Polish folk tune
Can I join the WikiOrchestra?[edit | edit source]
Yes, please! If you play an instrument, please join us – we will get you all set! There will be a (short) rehearsal on the day of the performance. Please also let us know ahead of the conference if you want to play along so that we can select a suitable piece, and send you the sheet music that meets your skill level.
Do I need to bring my instrument to Katowice?[edit | edit source]
Not necessarily. We can provide rental instruments for you. However, if you have the possibility to bring your instrument, please do!
What instruments will you need? Do you also need singers?[edit | edit source]
We will adapt the musical selection to the available instruments. If you would like to join as a singer (no prior knowledge of Polish required!), let us know!
What if I am not very good at playing an instrument?[edit | edit source]
No worries – we will arrange your part to suit your skill level!
