Die Rolle des Botschafters besteht darin, die Nachrichten über Wikimania vor der Konferenz zu verbreiten, zur Dynamik der Bewegung während der Konferenz beizutragen und die Ergebnisse der Konferenz anschließend zu verbreiten.

Der Botschafter hilft bei der Kommunikation mit den lokalen Communities, informiert über den Planungsprozess, den Zeitpunkt der Anmeldung und darüber, wie Stipendien beantragt werden, wie und warum Vorschläge für das Programm eingereicht werden sollen usw. Der Botschafter kann auch konstruktive Beiträge und Ideen für das Programm und die Gesamtveranstaltung liefern. Botschafter können Diskussionen auf anderen Konferenzen organisieren, die vor der Wikimania-Konferenz stattfinden.

Nach der Konferenz helfen Botschafter dabei, das während der Konferenz gewonnene Wissen an ihre Community zu verbreiten und sich aktiv in Netzwerken zu engagieren, um sich weiter mit den behandelten Themen zu befassen.
