2021:Submissions/Creating a tool that lets people listen to Wikipedia

Speakers[edit | edit source]

Sebastian Berlin (WMSE)

Abstract[edit | edit source]

Over the last few years Wikimedia Sverige has been developing m:Wikispeech, a tool that would allow readers of the Wikimedia projects to also be listeners. Using open text-to-speech software we have developed an extension for MediaWiki that reads articles out loud. We also started work on a tool for collecting speech data, since we noticed a lack of this in open text-to-speech solutions. Now we have started testing the text-to-speech tool. We had to make some last minute adaptations to get it to run on Wikipedia, but it is enough for initial testing. Going forward our goal is to improve and expand the text-to-speech tool. We also plan to finish development of the speech data collector and to integrate it with the Wikimedia projects.

Session Outcomes[edit | edit source]

The audience will learn about the motivation, development and current state of the Wikispeech project. They will learn what we have managed to achieve and what hurdles we faced in the process. They will know what plans we have for continuing work on the project.

I'm planning to attend this session live![edit | edit source]
